Some Kansas schools have begun to close due to the threat of an approaching winter storm system.

Schools closed Wednesday:

Colby - USD 315
Heartland Christian School - Colby
Oakley - USD 274
Sacred Heart Catholic School - Colby

A storm system is approaching Kansas that will bring winter weather and very gusty winds. Light snow is expected to begin falling Wednesday morning across northwest Kansas. As the system moves through the state, by afternoon, north central and southwest Kansas will see light rain change over to snow.

South central Kansas (including Wichita) will likely see rain showers Wednesday afternoon changing over to snow after sunset.

Total snow accumulations expected:

Northwest Kansas: 2-4”
Southwest Kansas: 0-2”
North Central Kansas: 1-4”
South Central Kansas: 0-1.5”

Localized higher amounts will be possible. Keep in mind; because of unseasonable temperatures the ground is very warm. Snow will become very slushy as it melts on contact.

The larger story will be the gusty northerly winds that follow this system. Winds will likely be sustained between 30-40 mph with higher gusts possible through the day Wednesday into Thursday.

Blowing and drifting snow will be likely across the state reducing visibility and making travel difficult especially late Wednesday night into Thursday. Use caution if traveling during this time.
