UPDATE: Monday, March 5, 2012

The Wichita Board of Education voted Monday night to close Bryant, Emerson, Lincoln and Mueller elementary schools, as well as Northeast Magnet High School.

All seven board members voted in favor of closing the schools.

Before a vote was cast, a group of about 20 concerned citizens were escorted out of the building by security.

In two later incidents, about a dozen more citizens were also escorted out of North High school.

Board members told those in attendance they understand their worries, fears and emotions.

Several recalled when they were in those parents' shoes many years ago, and went through school closings with their children.

In the end, however, all board members agreed closing four elementary schools was a decision that is necessary.

"I'm very saddened by this action. I don't like it, I don't think anybody else likes it. I can see the alternatives are worse," said Lynn Rogers, board member.

"Tonight isn't the end of the work, but the beginning of the rest of the work," said LaNora Nolan, board member.

Elementary students currently attending the three magnet schools that are closing, will be grandfathered into other schools.

Northeast Magnet students will be grandfathered into the new northeast high school in Bel Aire.

Wichita parents are expected to protest against school boundary changes as board members vote on the measure.

USD 259 Superintendent John Allison has proposed closing five schools, including Bryant, Emerson, Lincoln and Mueller elementary schools. The district also plans to close Northeast Magnet High School and move the program and students to the new Northeast High School in Bel Aire. The board is expected to approve the changes.

Parents and community members opposed to the school closings plan to protest before the meeting.

The meeting will be held tonight at Wichita’s North High School at 6 p.m.
