Enrollment numbers for Wichita Public Schools showed the district grew by 70 students over last year.

USD 259's enrollment as of Sept. 20 is 50,103 students, the highest count since 1975. The district said enrollment has grown by more than 1,141 students in the past decade.

"The increase demonstrates the confidence the community has in the quality education and programs that our district offers," said John Allison, Superintendent.

The district's middle schools grew the most, increasing by 230 students. Elementary schools grew by 121 students, the highest enrollment for elementary schools since 2005.

West High School added 96 more students this year, the district's largest secondary education increase.

Each year, Kansas' school districts are required by the state to take an official headcount each year. The district will receive state funding from the full-time equivalency head count.
