A Wichita police officer suffered minor injuries while arresting a man who tried to break in to a school.

It happened at West High School around 12:40 p.m. Tuesday.

Police said a school resource officer noticed a man trying to open a locked door. The suspect ran away when confronted. The SRO called police to report the incident.

An officer noticed a man matching the suspect’s description in the 1000 block of W. Irving. The man kicked and punched officers as authorities tried to take the suspect into custody, police said.

The suspect was arrested and put into the back of a patrol car. Officials said he then kicked out a back window, shattering glass. A piece of broken glass hit an officer in the eye.

Jail records indicate Paul Sapien, 34, was booked into the Sedgwick County Detention Center for battery on a law enforcement officer, criminal damage to property and trespassing.

Police do not have a motive in the case.
