It was only a drill, but for some teachers and staff at Valley Center's West Elementary, it felt very real.

When the principal announced the drill over the intercom, the kids knew exactly what to do.

"We sit there quietly and wait for Mr. Bastain to tell us that we can go back to work," said third grader Wyatt Wickum.

The teachers locked the doors, shut the blinds and turned off lights. The students lined up along the wall furthest from the windows and waited quietly.

"That's the intention," said Principal Peter Bastain. "That the building is evacuated and that they will give up and leave."

The principal called Tuesday's drill eerie after the shootings in Connecticut.
