Attorneys for a man standing trial on charges he wounded two eighth graders in a shooting at a suburban Denver middle school say their client was mentally ill.

A defense lawyer told jurors in opening statements Tuesday in Golden that Bruco Strong Eagle Eastwood heard voices that told him what to do and blamed other forces for controlling his acts.

Prosecutors say Eastwood knew the difference between right and wrong when he shot the two children as they were leaving Deer Creek
Middle School in February 2010.

Unarmed teachers on sidewalk patrol stopped the shooting by tackling Eastwood and restraining him until deputies arrived.

The school is near Columbine High School, where two young gunmen in 1999 fatally shot 12 students and a teacher before killing themselves.
