Galva Middle School in McPherson County caught fire early Friday morning, and lightning appears to be the cause.

Dispatchers told KAKE news they were told about the fire around 2:30 a.m. It was out by 5:15 a.m. The crew of a passing freight train is getting the credit for spotting the fire.

Authorities believe lightning started the fire at the school. Damage was confined to the gymnasium, where flames left a large hole in the roof while charring the walls and floor.

School is scheduled to start August 22nd. Seidl is not sure what possible changes the fire will mean to the school schedule. The building houses fourth- through eighth-graders.

The conductor of a Union Pacific train called 911 after seeing the fire around 2:30 a.m. Friday. Seidl says the quick report and the response by firefighters prevented damage that could have included a cave-in.
