WICHITA, Kan.-- President John Bardo addressed faculty, staff, and students today during a "University Update" at Wichita State University.

Bardo has been president of the university since July 2012, but he is overseeing more construction projects than in recent years.

Now, he wants to create an Innovation Campus and play a bigger role in entrepreneurship and technology-based innovation.

"Innovation, entrepreneurship, and technology are the key drivers of prosperity and the economy," said Bardo.

After the new residence hall is built, the plan is to raze Wheatshocker Apartments, build a new business school, and create technology centers close to 17th Street.

Some business students who attended the event agreed with the president's vision.

"We're constantly taught that innovation leads the country," said Alex Vermillion, student. "That, I think, is a great foundation and great principle to set the school standards by."

Bardo also mentioned that enrollment numbers are expected to increase for Fall 2014. So far, the university has seen an 86-percent increase in applications for the freshman class. He expects enrollment to be up between 600-900 students.

"We're going to continue to try to grow undergraduate and graduate enrollment," said Bardo. "We're also going to try to continue developing this campus."
