STERLING, Kan. -- A basketball game at a central Kansas college was canceled Thursday evening after a fire broke out in the gym.
The fire was reported around 8 p.m. in the Gleason Center gymnasium at Sterling College. Rice County Emergency Management said the gym was evacuated just before a men's basketball game between Sterling and Tabor College.
School President Scott Rich said it took about 15 minutes to evacuate the gym, which was filled with 300 to 400 people.
"The evacuation went very well," he said. "I am proud of our students and the Sterling community for immediately leaving the area when instructed. I would also like to thank the Tabor community and Tabor President, Dr. Jules Glanzer, for assisting in our efforts."
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and a damage estimate has yet to be determined.
The game has been postponed until Monday night.
