Students, like Mason McCanless, were excited to hear that NetApp will be adding more than 400 new jobs over the next five years in Wichita.
"It just makes me feel like my chances of being able to work there have shot up considerably," said McCanless, a senior in the College of Engineering at Wichita State University.
McCanless has been looking at job opportunities at companies like NetApp since choosing to major in computer engineering.
"One of the reasons that I came to WSU is because of their engineering program, being so great in the country. It's awesome to hear all these new jobs that are opening up, especially around here," he said.
His peers and faculty at the university shared the same excitement over the news that NetApp will nearly double their workforce in Wichita.
"In times that we've been having, for all these job cuts in the city, it's always nice to know that there's a place that is going to hire our graduates and many of our graduates do work at NetApp," said Dr. Rajiv Bagai, associate professor in the Electrical Engineering Computer Science department.
Bagai said that students in EECS have gotten cooperative opportunities, internships, and job placements at the data management company.
"Even though we are students and we're not engineers, we all get treated the same. They have an open door culture to where you have a problem, you just go straight up to the manager," said Mariama Beemer, a student at WSU, who works at NetApp.
A senior leader at NetApp said they are looking for people for both entry level and experienced positions, with degrees in computer science or computer engineering, and/or with backgrounds in information systems or information technology.
Employees at NetApp said they look for individuals who are skilled in math, science, and critical thinking.
NetApp will have a booth at the WSU Career Fair on Sept. 20, Koch Arena, 4-7 p.m. They are looking for candidates with degrees in computer engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science.
