UPDATE: October, 18, 2011
An indecent liberties case involving a local teacher and a former student, may have began about a year ago, according to new information released by police Tuesday.
Lt. Jeff Weible, Exploited and Missing Children's Unit, said the investigation between a Clearwater Middle School teacher and a 15-year-old boy began about a month ago after someone alerted the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Department. He said the case started as a child exploitation when authorities said they found evidence of text messages and pictures exchanged between the two.
Officers arrested Cathleen Balman, 42, on two counts of indecent liberties with a child Friday. She is currently free on bond. Weible said authorities had probable cause to believe that Balman and the teenager were involved in a relationship after interviewing her in mid-September.
Weible would not comment on what kind of evidence had been recovered. Investigators are also not saying where or when they believed any incidents occurred.
Authorities are not aware of whether the teacher had a prior history at another school before Friday's arrest. Weible said the case is wrapping up and will be presented to the District Attorney's office for consideration.
Balman was released Saturday after posting bail. The Clearwater school district placed the teacher on paid administrative leave as the investigation continues.
