Winfield officials have transferred ownership of the town's former Kansas National Guard armory to the school district.

The Winfield City Commission passed a motion Monday night to transfer the property to the school district, at no cost to the district.

The Winfield Daily Courier reports that school district president Scott Schoon says the building might be used for a transportation center, or bus barn.

The Winfield building was one of 18 armories closed by the Guard this year.

Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting, the adjutant general, said the armories were closed because of cuts in state funding, demographic changes and changes in the Guard's structure.
