In what has been a continuing controversy, students at Fort Hays University will vote this week on whether to increase the athletic fee by $2.
The athletic department says it needs the increase to offset cuts in state aid and increased participation in athletics.
The fee would offset costs for baseball, men's and women's track, softball, women's tennis and men's and women's golf. About half of the university's athletes participate in those sports.
The university's current fee is $5.48 per credit hour. Assistant athletic director Brad Haynes says that is a least $2 less than other schools in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association schools.
