Wichita public school students will be heading back to school next week, and for the first time many of them will be in newly air-conditioned classrooms.

The air conditioning projects are part of the district's bond issue plan.

Currently there are 34 projects under construction and most of them are ahead of schedule.

The district also says they are about $3 Million under budget.

Rita Rhodes, Elementary teacher, says she's been teaching in an un-air conditioned classroom for 20 years. So this will be the first time in her teaching career that she will have air conditioning.

OK Elementary is one of the 34 projects under construction, several of which have air conditioning improvements.

14 AC projects will be completed this Fall, bringing the total number of classrooms up to 42%.

The district hopes to have that to a 100% in the next two or three years.

The Bond issue is expected to be completed by 2005, and Wichita School District spokesperson says the air conditioning projects for the district will be done by 2004.

Even with the air conditioning improvements, the Wichita district will be running it's heat plan for all schools.
