5-7-07 - Greensburg City Administrator Steve Hewitt says one of the things he'll focus on Monday is getting his government working again.

Hewitt said he's trying to find employees, get purchase orders out and be sure workers -- and bills -- are paid. Most of the town's businesses that plan to rebuild will be starting from scratch.

FEMA director R. David Paulison is expected in Greensburg Monday to join city and state officials directing the clean-up and recovery effort.

The Kansas Highway Patrol and local law enforcement say US-54 will remain closed indefinitely through Greensburg. Travelers on US-54 will be directed by KDOT and law enforcement officials at two road blocks, one in Pratt at US-54 & US-281 and one west of Greensburg at US-54 & US-183, to use other highways depending on their destination.

To support the recovery efforts in Greensburg the Kansas Department of Transportation has provided the local KDOT Subarea Building for a law enforcement command center and has 50 employees, 20 heavy equipment loaders, and 20 dump trucks assisting with clearing US-54 and the local city streets. Additionally KDOT has brought in a mobile communications center to support law enforcement coordination.

Greensburg residents with proof of residency will be the only vehicles allowed by law enforcement past US-54 road blocks to travel into the Greensburg area.

Greensburg USD 422 Supt. Darin Headrick says classes are cancelled for the remainder of the semester. Graduation, scheduled for next weekend, is postponed. Classes will resume in the fall in neighboring communities and temporary buildings.

Marshall Ballard, an English teacher and girls basketball coach at Greensburg High School, is working with the principal and the superintendent to get the athletes that participate in track, golf, softball and baseball back in action.

He will be updating with information pertaining to these sports (where to meet and transportation assistance).
