Kansas Senate Republicans plan to offer the full Senate a $72 million school-funding plan that wouldn't require higher taxes.

Republican leaders were unable to find enough support for other plans during open debates this week on the Senate floor. They convened a caucus of GOP senators today to back the new plan.

It would be financed in part by spending $32 million of treasury reserves during the fiscal year starting July first.

To get the other 40 million, the state would postpone payments to the pension fund for teachers and government workers scheduled for next spring.

Any money appropriated during the current wrap-up session would be in addition to two and three-quarter billion dollars of state aid to school districts in the state's new budget.
