2-20-07 - A Wichita middle school student was tased by a school resource officer Tuesday. The female student, who was not identified by age, was attending Coleman Middle School.
In a letter to parents, principal Stephanie Stovall says the student created a disruption and then battered a school administrator and the School Resource Officer. That's when the principal says the student was touched by the officer's taser. It was not a "barbed" taser, but a "dry" taser.
It's not clear how the student was affected by the taser. The student was then arrested.
Earlier in the day, she'd been placed in in-school suspension for violating the dress code. That's when the student wouldn't calm down. She eventually knocked both the administrator and officer to the ground.
The following is the letter sent home to Coleman Middle School parents:
Dear Coleman Middle School Parents and Guardians:
The safety of our students and staff is our main concern here at Coleman. This morning, a student created a disruption and was defiant against school personnel and our Wichita Police School Resource Officer. During this disruption, the student battered a school administrator and our School Resource Officer. Unfortunately the student chose to endanger the safety of others by refusing to follow the directions of the police officer and school administration. This student was touched with a Taser by the SRO.
I want to acknowledge all of our students who cooperated and responded to staff directions to leave the area. I expect all Coleman Middle School students to act appropriately and respond to the requests of school administration, staff and Wichita Police Officers.
The students and staff are working to make this a safe place to learn and to be successful. We will continue to focus on student achievement and school safety.
