Many student teachers are making their way into Kansas classrooms without undergoing the same background checks required of full time teachers.

Kansas colleges and universities vary in the checks they conduct before placing students in schools.

The University of Kansas requires its students to undergo the same checks required to be licensed. Emporia State University only requires students to self report legal problems.

In an effort to check up on student teachers, the Auburn-Washburn school district in Topeka is conducting its own background checks of potential student teachers. But many other Kansas school districts don't conduct similar checks and assume universities have an adequate screening process.
