Washburn University has launched a system to notify faculty and students of an emergency.
The iAlert system sends e-mails to Washburn accounts and voice and text messages to numbers provided by students and employees. The system will be used to notify individuals of a campus emergency or special situation but not general campus announcements.
Participation in the alert system is voluntary, and it's free. Those who participate are required to keep their registered contact information up to date.
Washburn President Jerry Farley said the system will help the Topeka campus improve security and maintain a safe environment for staff, students and faculty.
Washburn officials say the system is a response to the 2007 shootings at Virginia Tech.
