The students in Marion's 8th grade class have worked hard to earn money for a class trip to St. Louis. At the beginning of the year they each paid $104.50 for plane tickets on American Airlines.

Last week, the class found out they would have to pay an extra $21 for each of those 68 tickets. If not, they would have to forfeit their deposit of $2,800.

Principal Tod Gordon says this extra charge could put future class trips in jeopardy. He says when they started going on these trips seven years ago things were much simpler and cheaper. He says the class will still go to St. Louis, but they will have less spending money when they get there.

An American Airlines representative says the extra charge is for fuel tax. He says this happens all the time, but he will pass this specific situation on to customer relations.
