Of the 19 students who were named National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists, 18 are from the same school.
It was a big surprise for a group of students at East High School Wednesday. They make up the state's largest group of semi-finalists from a single school.
"It's a testament as to how great our school is. I expected this because
everyday I am surrounded by wonderful individuals that are all intelligent,
all motivated," said semi-finalist Norin Ansari.
"It's nice to be part of a large group among friends, so we can all share in
our success," said semi-finalist Keeler Russell.
The 19 2009 National Merit semi-finalists from the Wichita School District are all students who scored in the top one-half percent in the state on the PSAT.
"We worked really hard at this, and it's nice to know that our hard work is
paying off," said semi-finalist Tiffany Hwang.
The next step is National Merit Finals, which will be judged through an application process and completing the SAT.
Scholarship winners will be chosen on the basis of academic skills and achievements, extra-curricular accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in the spring.
