Back to School Theft Prevention Tips:
What can students do to protect their valuables?
Never leave valuables unattended in a classroom, locker room or music hall.
Don’t leave items in visible in your car, this only entices thieves.
Save receipts and create a home inventory, which can help speed up an insurance claim if the item is stolen.
For high ticket items (expensive sporting equipment, some musical instruments, electronics), contact your insurance agent and make sure your current policy has you covered.
Is insurance available to students on college campuses?
In a Dorm: Students living on campus may be covered by their parent’s homeowners policy. It is always a good idea to contact your insurance agent before your student heads back to school.
Off-Campus Housing: For students living in an off-campus house or apartment, they are only covered if they have renters insurance. For approximately $15 per month, students will be protected against theft, fire and liability much in the same way a homeowner is protected.
