The Kansas House's top Republican says budget problems may force the state to rethink its commitments on aid to public schools.

Speaker Melvin Neufeld said Wednesday that the GOP-controlled Legislature doesn't plan to touch a small increase in spending on schools they've already promised for the 2009-10 school year.

But he says state revenues could fall short of expectations, as they did during the fiscal year that ended June 30.

Democratic Gov. Kathleen Sebelius has said she opposes any cuts in spending on public schools or higher education that would affect students directly.
