April 3--A frightening morning for Goddard school students as their bus driver collapses while behind the wheel.
It happened around 7 a.m. , as the bus was on 47th street south near 135th street west.
The driver, Bob Wegerer, slumped behind the wheel as the bus left the road and came to a stop in a wheat field. A 14-year-old student called the bus barn for help. Emergency crews arrived, but were unable to save Wegerer. "The students handled themselves just wonderfully. They were calm they still on the bus when helped arrived. The hs school student who used the radio to call for help was very clear, very calm he knew exactly where they were on the route," said Goddard School Police Chief Ronny Lieurance.
Students found out later in the morning the driver had died. Counselors were on hand to talk with the eight students who witnessed Wegerer's collapse.
