Like many families, the state's school districts are feeling pinched by rising food prices.

It's pressuring them to increase what they charge students for lunches.

Some already have increased their prices. For example, the cost of lunches in Topeka schools will increase by 10 cents each when the new school year begins in August. School meal prices in Wichita increased on July 1st. The entire list of meal price changes is listed below.

And those rising prices are coming at a time when school districts are increasingly focused on serving healthier lunches. Some officials worry that rising prices could hurt those efforts.

At the Department of Education, Director of Child Nutrition Jodi Mackey says it already costs more to provide high-quality items such as fresh fruit and vegetables.

The increase could be offset by stopping the free breakfasts and lunches. Half of the children receiving these their parents drive big fancy cars have name brand clothes and some even spend $400 to $500 on shoes. Something is wrong the majority of middle class will absorb this increase.
