Investigators are calling the weekend fire on the athletic field at Northwest High School arson.

The fire happened overnight Friday, burning a dugout and storage shed for the Northwest High baseball team. Damage estimates total around $20,000 and include equipment stored in the building that was burned.

"It's disappointing to a lot of our students, it's an inconvenience. Most of all in terms of being able to use your own facility," Northwest High School Principal Jim McNiece said.

Because of the burnt dugout, the baseball fields have been shut down for the rest of the season. The team will now have to play its home games at other schools.

McNiece said, "This field was donated by a lot of dollars but even more important, a lot of hours of work on the part of our booster club parents that support our baseball team, coaches and the players over the last few years."

The dugout was built in the memory of a former student.

Only hours after the fire, calls began pouring in promising new donations. The school hopes to have everything rebuilt by the end of summer.
