Elementary school students in Greensburg have finally gotten a chance to meet the McPherson girl who raised $4,000 to help rebuild their school.

During a school assembly yesterday, 7-year-old Emma Marten and her family handed over the proceeds of a September auction of her artwork.

The K-3 school was destroyed along with most of the town when a
monster tornado struck last May.

School officials said they plan to use the money any way they can but will focus first on the school's art program and Emma's grade level. They said they typically target donations on the areas of interest by the contributors.

Emma got the idea in May when she saw a Kansas City artist's benefit art show for Greensburg in Hutchinson. Her parents told her they would help her do a benefit show of her own if she created 25 art pieces, which she did mostly out of crayon, marker and paint.

A new school won't be completed for at least another year and a
half but the school is making do with temporary facilities. A new gym and cafeteria have already been built and served as a backdrop for Monday's ceremony.

It's good to hear that even someone as young as this child is able to make such a huge difference in people's lives. This little girl was willing to lend a helping hand to complete strangers. We should all take note of such acts of kindness, even from the youngest people in society. We could all stand to learn a few lessons, if even from someone so young. This little girl obviously has a very big heart, and wanted to share something she was good at with those struck by complete devastation. I hope everyone saw her act of kindness, and it has made them realize that even something so small as a selling a picture could impact someone else's life in such a great way. I would be honored if one of my children were to do this for someone else. I hope I can teach them the same kindness this little girl has learned.

What a beautiful example of the future generation of our country. I can think of a lot of adults who should look toward this little lady as an example of a good citizen and wonderful human!
