Michael O'Donnell announced today that he will resign from the Wichita city council, effective at the end of the year.

Council member O'Donnell was elected earlier this month to represent District 25 in the Kansas Senate. He will submit his resignation during the city council meeting on December 4th, which will go into effect on December 31st. O'Donnell represents District IV.

“I want to thank the residents of District IV for believing in me and allowing me to serve as their Council Member and to serve as a State Senator for many of them,” said O’Donnell. ”While it would be possible for me to serve in both positions, I feel our district is best served with a full-time Council Member and a full-time State Senator."

There were two years left of O'Donnell's council term. That vacancy will by filled by the next general election on April 2nd.

At the December 4th meeting, council members will decide if the seat will remain vacant until the election next year, or if they will appoint a temporary council member.
