The City of Wichita is working with the federal government to help fund and build a water storage area that will help take hundreds of homes out of the flood plain.

FEMA revised the city's flood plain map which will go into effect on May 2. More than 200 homes are affected, some will be put into the flood plain, while others will be taken out. If your home is in the flood plain and you have a mortgage, you are required to get flood insurance.

City engineer Scott Lindenbak says he is working with the Corp of Engineers to get a $15 million project funded that would help relieve those who have to pay that expensive flood insurance. The Dry Creek overflow project would be built near 167th and 13th street. It may be five years though before construction begins.
