The Wichita City Council approved an ordinance change that will allow the possession of any knives.
Starting July 1, people will be able to openly carry knives, such as switch blades and pocket knives of any length.
"Law enforcement are concerned about this bill, because, someone could have a sword and we would not be able to prohibit the possession of that weapon," said Sharon Dickgrafe, Wichita chief deputy attorney.
The new ordinance repeals existing prohibitions of carrying knives over a certain length.
The council members voted, 5-2, to conform to the new state law on knives. Mayor Carl Brewer and Lavonta Williams voted no.
"A knife can be just as dangerous as a gun," said Brewer.
City staff will be requesting an opinion from the Kansas Attorney General to clarify the law.
