A 16-year-old boy arrested for allegedly shooting and killing another 16-year-old boy appeared at the juvenile courthouse in Wichita Tuesday for a detention hearing.

The teenager who was fatally shot was identified as Nathaniel Terrell. He was killed Saturday just before 10 p.m. when another teen, who police say was showing a girl a gun, shot him in the chest. Investigators have said they do not believe the suspect knew the gun was loaded.

The suspect, who is not being identified because of his age, is charged with involuntary manslaughter, criminal possession of a firearm by a minor, and with being a minor in possession of alcohol.

His next court appearance is scheduled for July 20.

Wichita police arrest a 16-year-old boy in connection to a weekend homicide that killed another teenager.

It happened in the 3300 block of south Broadway just before 10 p.m. Saturday. Police said four juveniles were at a home, when a 16-year-old boy took out a gun to show it to a 17-year-old girl.

The suspect confronted his 14-year-old brother and another 16-year-old male, and pulled the trigger. A bullet hit the 16-year-old in the chest. Investigators said the boy did not believe the gun was loaded.

"I believe that he thought the gun was unloaded," said Lt. Ken Landwehr, Wichita police department. "There were live cartridges on the bed where he was showing the gun to the girl. But unfortunately there were only five cartridges on the bed and the gun holds six rounds."

The victim was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis where he later died.

Police arrested the 16-year-old boy and booked him into juvenile detention facility on second degree murder charges.

Authorities said the weapon was stolen.

"The investigation showed that the parents were out for the evening," Landwehr said.

Alcohol and marijuana use may have played a role in the deadly shooting, officials said.

The victim's name has not been released.
