Kansas Corrections Secretary Ray Roberts has opened a statewide conference on prison ministry.
Roberts gave the keynote address Monday at the opening of the "Out for Life," conference in Wichita. The conference is organized by Prison Fellowship, a nationwide group that promotes ministry in prisons and church support for offenders after their release.
Roberts said volunteer efforts to help inmates re-enter society after serving time have had an impact in Kansas. He said he wants to expand those programs.
He called on religious groups to form a coalition of volunteers across the state to provide mentoring and support services to help inmates and reduce recidivism.
Gov. Sam Brownback is also addressed the conference Monday.
