The Dual Polarization system is being added to the radar at The National Weather Service in Wichita to help in detecting storms.

The system will now transmit and receive both horizontally and vertically radio wave pulses. It will allow meteorologists to see more precisely what kind of precipitation is falling from a storm.

"That's going to help at night," said KAKE managing meteorologist Jay Prater. "We can see debris flying up from a tornado along with the rotation signature."

The new system should be up and running by July 18.
