A Rose Hill man was arrested on assault charges after shooting a teenager in the back, sheriff officials said.

It happened in the 150000 block of E. 79th Street South around 11:20 p.m. Saturday. Officers were responding to the report of a suspicious character in the area. Authorities said Michael Mitchell, 47, fired a weapon at a vehicle in his driveway.

A short time later, investigators found a 17-year-old man in a nearby home suffering from a gunshot wound to the back. He was taken to a Wichita hospital for treatment. The teenager has since been released, according to a Sedgwick County sheriff's release.

Deputies booked Mitchell into the Sedgwick County jail on three counts of aggravated assault and one count of aggravated battery. The case will be presented to district attorneys office for review later this week.
