A proposed oil drilling project Wichita's Delano district is off, at least for now.

Wichita City Councilman Jeff Longwell said Friday that City Manager Robert Layton has told council members he will withdraw the city's application to drill for oil under Century II. Longwell did not know whether the application had yet been withdrawn Friday.

The proposal, which faced opposition from business owners and residents in the Delano district, was also opposed by Ruffin Properties. The company's executive vice president, Chris Ruffin, said in a letter to the Metropolitan Planning Commission that Ruffin's planned development projects in Delano would likely be put on hold if the oil drilling project moved forward.
