The Wichita City Council unanimously voted to appoint a renaming committee at the next council meeting on November 5th.
Radio personalities from 104.5 The Fox, Jan Harrison and Phil Thompson, said that 1,573 people have signed a petition to rename Wichita Mid-Continent Airport to one that would honor a former president.
Harrison believes the new name should honor Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United States. Although he was not born in Kansas, Eisenhower spent most of his childhood in Abilene.
"I'm delighted that the council chose to move forward," said Harrison. "I think we've proffered a name that is so world renowned that it would be hard to come up with a name that was better."
Harrison thinks this is the right time for the name change as the new terminal is still under construction.
The city manager will have cost estimates for the name change at the Nov. 5 meeting.
The new airport terminal is scheduled to be open in March 2015.
