President Barack Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney are preparing this weekend for their upcoming debates.

Obama has momentum on his side, yet he's still struggling to revive the passion and excitement that propelled him to the White House in 2008. He must also convince skeptical Americans that he can restore the economy to full health.

Meanwhile, Mitt Romney is grasping for his last, best chance to reboot his campaign after a disastrous September. He needs to instill confidence that he's a credible and trusted alternative to Obama, with a better plan for strengthening the economy.

The first debate is Wednesday night in Denver.

The presidential candidates are letting their running mates do the talking today.

Campaigning in Florida today, Vice President Joe Biden said he and Obama were presented with the prospect of a trillion-dollar budget deficit during their first week in office. Biden blamed the deficit on the Bush administration.

In New Hampshire, Republican Paul Ryan promised voters they will "live free and prosper" if they elect Romney. Ryan is contrasting the economic stagnation he says will continue if Obama is re-elected with the prosperity he and Romney will create.
