Newly declassified documents detail Richard Nixon's advice to President Bill Clinton on the post-Cold War world, and Nixon even offered to serve as a conduit for messages to Russian President Boris Yeltsin.

The documents from early 1994 capture the 81-year-old Nixon in his role of elder statesman, two decades after the Watergate scandal.

They recount Nixon's communications with Clinton aides and include notes prepared for Clinton for a phone call with the 37th president.

The records are part of an exhibit opening Friday at the Nixon Presidential Library in Yorba Linda.

The memos provided to The Associated Press by the library fill in the backstory to Nixon's final trip to Russia. Clinton has talked often of his gratitude to Nixon for his foreign affairs guidance.
