The U.S. Senate health committee passes a $600 billion health care reform plan, a move coming one day after House Democratic leaders put forward their $1.5-trillion proposal.
President Barack Obama praised the action. He wants both houses to finish their versions by the August recess so work on a compromise can start in September.
Obama stood with nurses supporting his broad plan. The Senate health committee approved a measure that would require people to get insurance and requires employers to help pay.
The bill would provide federal aid to families and individuals making less than four times the poverty level, or about $88,000 for a family of four.
