A Kansas Senate committee is working on a bill that would cut spending to help balance the state's next budget.
The Senate Ways and Means Committee hoped to vote Thursday on its version of the year's final budget bill. That bill we part of a larger package for balancing the budget for fiscal year 2010, which begins July 1.
Legislators already have approved a $13 billion spending plan for fiscal 2010, and they had thought it would balance.
But last week, officials and university economists issued a new fiscal forecast that slashed anticipated revenues. The result was a projected $328 million deficit in the fiscal 2010 budget.
