The House has pushed through a massive economic stimulus package.
The approval is a big victory for President Barack Obama.
The vote for the $819 billion program was 244-188. No Republican voted for the package despite direct appeals for bipartisanship by the president. They insist on more tax cuts and less spending.
After the vote, President Obama issued a statement saying the plan will save or create more than three million jobs over the next few years. He also welcomed congressional leaders of both parties to the White House for drinks and more lobbying.
The vote sent the bill to the Senate. Debate could begin there as soon as Monday on companion legislation.
Democrats have promised to have recovery legislation ready for the president's signature by mid-February.
