Sen. Sam Brownback has introduced legislation to block the transfer of detainees housed at Guantanamo to the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth.
Brownback announced the filing yesterday, days after he held a news conference at Fort Leavenworth stating his opposition to moving some 250 detainees to Kansas.
His bill would prohibit the spending of any money to move the detainees. Brownback said such a move to Kansas would be "unwise and unsafe."
The military prison houses close to 500 soldiers, Marines, airmen and sailors who are sentenced to serve at least five years in prison. Brownback said a separate facility should be built to house detainees, not moving inmates at Fort Leavenworth.
