Kansas Senate President May Face Challenge

By: Associated Press Email

Senate President Steve Morris may have to fight to keep his job.

Republican Sen. Susan Wagle, of Wichita, says she is thinking about challenging him for the chamber's top position. Morris is seeking a second four-year term.

Wagle says she won't challenge Morris unless she's certain she has the votes, something she said she should know soon.

Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt, of Independence, said he's optimistic Morris, of Hugoton, will have enough moderate Republican support to be re-elected.

Republicans increased their margin by one in the Senate to 31-9. Six Republicans and three Democrats will be newcomers to the chamber.

House and Senate members meet Dec. 1 to select their leaders.
