John McCain carries Kansas, in line with its reliably Republican history in presidential elections.

McCain's win was based on an analysis of information from voters
interviewed as they left polling places Tuesday. The interviews were conducted for The Associated Press by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International.

Early returns suggested Barack Obama was headed toward the best
showing of any Democratic candidate in recent memory.

McCain had 51 percent of the vote in early returns, compared to 46 percent for Obama. If that result holds, it would be the best showing by a Democrat since Lyndon Johnson won Kansas in 1964.

Both parties assumed from the beginning that McCain would capture the state's six electoral votes.
