Republican Pat Roberts hopes that nearly three decades of federal funds delivering for Kansas would win him a third term in the Senate.
Roberts and Democrat Jim Slattery have been locked in hard-fought political battle, disagreeing of many issues from the Iraq war to the cause of the nation's financial meltdown.
But Roberts was viewed as the favorite from the outset. He represented the 1st District in the House for 16 years and then moved to the Senate in 1996.
Slattery represented the 2nd District in eastern Kansas for 12 years before working as a Washington lobbyist.
