At least 63,000 Kansans registered to vote in the five weeks leading up to the deadline.

Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh says at least 1.73 million people are registered to vote, a record for Kansas.

Thornburgh, political party officials and activists say this year's hotly contested presidential election is a big reason for an increase in voter interest.

The interest also is shown in advance voting. About 209,000 advance ballots have been returned to county election officials. An additional 83,000 advance ballots have been requested.

Thornburgh says about 30 percent of Kansans could vote in advance. In 2004, it was 20 percent.
