Before the surge in 2007, Democratic Rep. Nancy Boyda questioned sending additional troops to Iraq.
She continues to face criticism for it from Republican challenger Lynn Jenkins.
Boyda, seeking a term in the 2nd Congressional District, acknowledges the surge was a success. But she also says it may have left the military stretched too thin for the future.
It's not just a question for politicians. There's a robust debate inside the military, including among officers at Forts Riley and Leavenworth. Both forts are in the 2nd District and factor heavily in war missions.
Jenkins also agrees that the surge successful. But she says it misguided to suggest the U.S. is more vulnerable.
