School Board Candidate's Sexuality Becomes Issue Late In Campaign

A gay State Board of Education candidate is upset that his sexuality has become an issue late in his campaign.

Democrat Christopher Renner, of Manhattan, is running in the 6th District of northeast and north-central Kansas.

He's hoping to unseat Republican Kathy Martin, of Clay Center, who has been part of a conservative bloc on issues such as evolution and sex education.

Renner's causes as a community activist have included opposition to an amendment to the Kansas Constitution to ban same-sex marriage. He once noted his sexual orientation during a legislative hearing.

This week, a Martin supporter sent a letter to newspapers about him and suggests he would pursue a "radical" social agenda.
