John McCain is dismissing poll numbers that show him trailing in his White House bid and says his campaign is doing "just fine."

McCain tells NBC's "Meet the Press" that he's closing the gap in some battleground states and believes he'll win on Nov. 4. The Arizona Republican says he's been heartened by the size of the crowds and the level of enthusiasm at his rallies.

McCain also says it's going to be "a very close race" -- one that gives voters a clear choice between two "very different" political philosophies. He describes Barack Obama's economic position as the most liberal he has seen.

He also rejects the notion that running mate Sarah Palin is unqualified to be president and is hurting his campaign. He describes Palin as "exactly what Washington needs."

McCain campaigns today in Iowa and Ohio.
