8 Apply For Vacancy On Kansas Supreme Court

Two Kansas Court of Appeals judges, the state's securities commissioner and a former legislator have applied for the state Supreme Court.

A vacancy will occur because Chief Justice Kay McFarland is retiring in January. Eight people met Friday's deadline to apply.

They are: Court of Appeals Judges Tom Malone and Steve Leben; Securities Commissioner Chris Biggs; former state Rep. Ward Loyd of Garden City; Overland Park municipal judge Karen Arnold-Burger; Shawnee attorney Dan Biles; Neodesha attorney Dennis Depew; and Douglas County District Judge Robert Fairchild.

A commission will interview them in November and choose three finalists for Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.
